HOW IT HAPPENED
CU used a 6-0 run to go up 8-3 in the first, forcing the first Cal timeout. The Buffs built the lead to eight points until kills from Pantovic and Makana Meyer made it three straight for the Bears to pull within 13-8. Cal closed to within five again at 20-15 on a kill from Taumoepeau, but Colorado scored five of the final seven points to take the opening set.
Colorado jumped in front again to start the second set, going up 7-2. A block by Grote and Taumoepeau made it just a three-point deficit at 8-5 before the Buffs scored seven of the next eight points to make it a 15-6 advantage. CU cruised the rest of the way to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Bears fought back to open the third, taking a 4-3 lead on another Taumoepeau kill and tied it at six-all on a block by the freshman from San Diego. Colorado scored the next six points in a row to take a 12-6 lead and Cal couldn't get closer than four from there as the Buffs took the match in straight sets.
The Bears return to Haas Pavilion for a 2 p.m. first serve on Friday, Feb. 12 against No. 7 Stanford. The match will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
