No. 19 Cal Faces Pacific At Hellman This Week

BERKELEY – The 19th-ranked California women's tennis team welcomes Pacific to the Hellman Tennis Complex this week, with the Golden Bears facing the Tigers on Friday at 12 p.m. Cal brings a 3-1 record into the nonconference match, while Pacific has a 0-1 record.
 
Under current health protocols, fans are not allowed to attend Cal Athletics home events. Fans can watch home tennis matches at the Hellman Tennis Complex through Cal's live stream. Last Time: Cal Routs Dons
Cal defeated San Francisco, 7-0, in its most recent match on Jan. 29 in Berkeley. Sophomore Erin Richardson clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win over the Dons' Arianna Capogrosso at court-six singles.
 
The Bears' 40th-ranked pair of Haley Giavara and Valentina Ivanov clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over the USF duo of Rita Colyer and Mya Bui, the older sister of Cal freshman Jada Bui, on court one.
 
Poll Position
Cal sits at No. 19 in the Oracle ITA Rankings, with the new team poll coming out on Wednesday.
 
Three Bears are still ranked in singles and two Cal pairs are ranked in doubles. Haley Giavara – a singles All-American and the ITA Northwest Regional Rookie of the Year in 2019-20 – is ranked 18th. She defeated Mya Bui, 6-2, 6-2, at court-one singles in Cal's win over USF.
 
Senior Julia Rosenqvist, ranked 43rd, had the first complete singles win against USF, besting Maria Martinez Vaquero on court two, 6-1, 6-2. The 26th-ranked Valentina Ivanov likewise prevailed in singles against the Dons, topping Rita Colyer, 6-2, 6-4, on court three.
 
In doubles, Giavara and Ivanov (1-0) are ranked 40th, and the duo of Rosenqvist and Anna Bright (1-2) is 43rd.

Scouting Pacific

  • The Tigers lost to Nevada, 4-3, in their Feb. 6 season opener in Stockton, California.
  • Sophomore Klara Kosan (1-0) is ranked 70th in singles.
  • Mike Erwin is in his third year as Pacific's head coach.
