Soccer Plays In Home-and-Home Series with GCU

TEMPE, AZ. -- Posting a 2-0 record to start the season, the Arizona State Soccer team will now have a home-and-home series against Grand Canyon University this weekend. The first game of the series will be in Glendale at GCU Stadium on Thursday at 7 p.m. MST and game two will be held at Sun Devil Stadium on Sunday at 7 p.m. MST. 

The Sun Devils opened the 2021 season with a pair of home games against UTEP and NMSU, taking the win in both games, 3-1 and 4-0.    

The last meeting between the Lopes and Sun Devils was over 20 years ago, on Aug. 21, 1999, with ASU earning a shutout win, 6-0. 

Sun Devil Rewind

In Sunday afternoon's match, junior forward Nicole Douglas climbed the ladder into the program's top-10 all-time career goals, where she stands at No. 7 with 25. Douglas had two goals in Thursday's match against UTEP to combine for a total of five goals on the weekend in two multi-goal games. The last hat trick for Douglas was last season against Central Arkansas, where she put up two back-to-back three-goal games on Aug. 25 and 26. Her impressive start to the season earned her the Pac-12 Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday and is the first Sun Devil to do so since Cali Farquharson in November of 2015. 

Junior midfielder Eva Van Deursen tallied her first goal and first assist of the season against NMSU. Van Deursen had four goals and eight assists last season with the Maroon and Gold. Junior midfielder Alexia Delgado earned a total of three assists last weekend after finishing last season with two goals and two assists. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Giulia Cascapera earned the shutout on Sunday afternoon in her first game played this season. Last season Cascapera had three shutouts with a .738 save percentage. 

What About the Lopes

The Lopes finished the 2020 season with an overall record of 4-14-1 and 3-5-0 in WAC conference play. After taking a 12-1 win in an exhibition game against Benedictine Mesa, GCU started regular season play last weekend with two home games against Arizona and Northern Arizona, falling to both teams, 1-4 and 0-2, to start the with an 0-2 record thus far. 

Sophomore Jaycee Iranshad has been the only goal scorer for the Lopes this season in the opening game against Arizona. Iranshad had two goals and one assist last season. The Lopes will turn to last season's offensive scorers, sophomore Dani Babb and senior Camryn Larson each had four goals. In the exhibition game, all three of these key players found the back of the net. Larson had a hat trick, Babb had two, and Iranshad had two, which contributed half of the goals scored in the 12-goal game.
