Top-Ranked Bruins Blank Fresno State in Season Opener
NOTE: Saturday's doubleheader has been canceled due to COVID-related protocols within the Cal Poly program.
LOS ANGELES - Megan Faraimo struck out 13 across six shutout innings, allowing only one hit, while Bubba Nickles and Rachel Garcia returned to the Bruin lineup with first-inning home runs, as No. 1 UCLA defeated Fresno State 7-0 on Friday at Easton Stadium.
Faraimo, who gave up just three baserunners on a walk and hit by pitch, extended her consecutive scoreless innings streak to 31 2/3 dating back to last season. She fanned the side in the first and fifth innings and two each in the third, fourth and sixth. The only hit allowed came on a bloop single to right with one out in the sixth. Lexi Sosa tossed a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
The Bruins had nine hits from seven different players. Garcia and Seneca Curo both had two hits, while Garcia and Nickles each drove in a pair.
Nickles picked up right where she left off after touring with the United States Olympic Team in 2020, hitting a leadoff homer to give the Bruins an early lead. After an infield single for Briana Perez, Garcia matched her fellow Olympian with a home run to left field to make it 3-0. A single to left for Delanie Wisz and a walk to Kinsley Washington brought Anna Vines up, and she laced a single to right-center to bring in Wisz with the Bruins' fourth run. Alyssa Garcia followed with a fly ball to right to bring in Washington, and when the throw in to third got away, Vines scampered home to make it 6-0.
The Bruins tacked on another run in the third. With one out, Curo reached on an infield single, Kelli Godin singled to right to move Curo to third and Nickles knocked in Curo on a grounder to short to increase the lead to 7-0.
UCLA's next scheduled games will be a doubleheader at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Feb. 20 beginning at 1 p.m.
