Buffs Swept Out of Bohler Gym

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State Volleyball completed the series sweep of Colorado (4-2, 4-2 Pac-12) this spring, defeating the Buffaloes 3-0 inside Bohler Gym Saturday afternoon. 

Set scores from the match were: 25-21, 25-18, and 25-19 in favor of No. 22 WSU (6-2, 6-2 Pac-12).

With each of these programs familiar with one another heading into match two, the opening set play was much more intense to begin match two. Multiple lead changes and ties were erased after a 5-1 scoring run aided by kills from Pia Timmer, and Madga Jehlářová put the set score at 15-9 overall. Colorado began stringing together small runs late into the set, chipping away at the Cougar lead 21-19. WSU was able to regroup and win consecutive points, one being an Alexcis Lusby kill, for the 25-21 win.

Set number two brought more of the same intensity as the first, as seven total ties between the two programs saw a knotted up score of 10-10 midway through. A Kalyah Williams kill and a Colorado error gave the Cougars a slim 12-11 advantage but a WSU attack error saw the set tied up once again. Washington State got hot late in this second game, posting a 7-1 run over the Buffaloes to hold down the 22-17 lead. Kills from Hannah Pukis, Timmer and Lusby all fueled the offensive attack of the Cougars, and a Jehlářová ace just swung the momentum further in the home squads favor. WSU capped off the set win after Colorado attack error as well.
 
The third and final set of this contest featured the Buffaloes jumping ahead of WSU with an 8-4 run to begin play. The Cougs slowly chipped away at he Colorado lead, until making their move at 14-11 with a 5-1 scoring run to tie up the set at 15-15. Timmer and Pukis each recorded kills during this quick run, and a huge block from Lusby and Williams helped spark the run itself. Washington State took full control of set three after a 7-1 run gave the home squad a 22-17 advantage, as multiple kills from Timmer and a solo block from Pukis ignited the Cougars to a substantial lead. WSU finished off the Buffs with an ace from Jehlářová for the 25-19 victory and the sweep. 

STAT OF THE MATCH
The Washington State Cougars finished the match with a hitting percentage of .387 overall, and a kill percentage of .484 as well. The WSU offensive attack was on point throughout the match, most notably in set number two where the Cougars hit .600 overall as as team.

MATCH NOTES

  • Hannah Pukis did an incredible job facilitating the offense in this contest, recording 33 assists, and added 10 digs to her stat sheet for her seventh double-double of the year. 
  • Pia Timmer and Madga Jehlářová finished with double digit kills on the day at 12 and 10 respectively.
  • Alexcis Lusby provided some stellar offense as well with seven kills, while hitting .700 overall, and recorded three total blocks as well.
