USC Women’s Tennis Falls in Tight Match to Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif.--The No. 16 ranked USC women's tennis team took a trip up PCH today (Feb. 13) to challenge No. 4 Pepperdine for the second time this season. The Women of Troy lost to the Waves 4-3 in a highly competitive match. USC is now 3-2 on the season, with both losses coming at the hands of the Waves. 
 
The afternoon began with doubles and the Waves made the first move. Pepperdine's Lahey/Redelijk defeated USC's McKee/Willson 6-2 on court two. Over on court three, the Wave pair of Zaar/Pachkaleva closed out doubles with a 6-4 win over the Trojan duo of Cheong/Dvorak. USC entered singles with a 0-1 deficit. 
 
The Waves put the first singles point on the board as No. 33 Jessica Failla beat Trojan redshirt senior No. 22 Angela Kulikov 6-1, 6-2 on court one to increase Pepperdine's lead to 2-0. 
 
Sophomore No. 48 Eryn Cayetano was the first to score for the Women of Troy with her 6-1, 6-2 victory over No. 12 Shiori Fukuda on court three. 
 
Freshman No. 103 Naomi Cheong had a massive win as she upset the No. 1 player in the nation, Pepperdine's Ashley Lahey, 6-0, 7-5 on court two to tie up the match at 2-2. 
 
The Waves responded with a win of their own as Lisa Zaar defeated Trojan redshirt senior Clare McKee 6-3, 6-3 on court six. 
 
Pepperdine's Taisiya Pachkaleva clinched the match for the Waves as she defeated junior Danielle Willson 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 on court four.
 
Although the match was won, the remaining court was played out. Trojan redshirt senior Summer Dvorak claimed the final win of the day as she defeated No. 45 Lexi Ryngler 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 on court five. 
 
USC's next action brings the team back to Marks Stadium where they will take on Hawaii on Thursday (Feb. 18) and San Diego on Saturday (Feb. 20).
