Beavers Find 5-1 Victory over Loyola Marymount; Go Undefeated in First Weekend of Play

Feb 14, 2021

LOS ANGELES - The Oregon State softball team beat Loyola Marymount, 5-1, to close its first weekend of the season with five wins and zero losses.
The Beavers were led by a standout showing from Mariah Mazon. The junior pitcher notched 10 strikeouts against the Lions. Her efforts were boosted by the Oregon State offense. Sophomore Rylee Maston hammered a home run as the second hit of the game while sophomore Frankie Hammoude and junior Missy Nunes hit two straight home runs in the third inning.
The first inning flew by quickly with four offensive plays and three-straight outs by the Beavers.
Freshman Grace Messmer connected, in the second inning, for the first hit of the game. Maston followed suit with a home run, earning two RBIs for a 2-0 lead heading into the third.
Mazon and the Oregon State defense continued to make plays to keep Loyola Marymount off the board. Mazon picked up five strikeouts over the course of the third to the fifth and the defense combined for three-straight outs in all three innings (third-fifth).
The Beaver defense was highlighted in the third after a Lion hit a single. The second batter lined out to junior Chance Burden (LF) who then passed to freshman Xiao Gin (2B). Gin and Hammoude (1B) completed the double play for the first two outs.
In the offensive half of the fifth, the Beaver offense notched two homers, garnering three runs. Mazon hit a triple to get on base before Hammoude hit her first home run of the 2021 season. OSU wanted more as Nunes followed with her fourth home run over the weekend.
The final two innings saw the Lions fighting hard to catch up but the Beavers would not let up, allowing just one run in the bottom of the sixth.
OSU finished the game with 10 hits and two errors. Mazon struck out 10 batters and, along with the rest of the team, allowed just five hits and one run against LMU.
Oregon State will return to action at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Arizona on Feb. 25-28. The Beavers will open the invitational against Brigham Young on Friday before playing Seattle and Arizona on Saturday. OSU will close next weekend's competition against Colorado State on Sunday.
