No. 3 UCLA Opens 2021 with 19-10 Victory at No. 11 Fresno State
FRESNO, Calif. -- No. 3 UCLA (1-0, 0-0 MPSF) opened the 2021 season with a dominant 19-10 win at No. 11 Fresno State (2-1) on Sunday afternoon at the Fresno State Aquatics Center. The Bruins improved to 4-0 all-time against the Bulldogs.
Freshman Cassidy Miller, playing in her first collegiate game, led all scorers with five goals. Sophomore Abbi Hill also had a hat trick for the Bruins. Senior Jahmea Bent got the start in the cage and had one save while allowing four goals in the first half. Sophomore Quinn Winter played the third quarter and registered three stops while giving up five goals. Freshman Sydney Chiang played the fourth in goal and made one save while surrendering one goal.
Fresno State scored the first goal of the game, but UCLA reeled off five straight goals and never looked back. Miller scored her first on a penalty shot (7:16) to tie it at 1-1. She put the Bruins in front with a power play goal (6:15). Then sophomore Layne Anzaldo scored back-to-back goals (5:39 and 4:57) to make it 4-1. Freshman Malia Allen would extend the lead to 5-1 at the 2:58 mark of the opening period. FSU got a power play goal from Emily Nicholson (1:48) to end the scoring in the period with the Bruins leading 5-2.
UCLA put another five goals on the board in the second period. After a goal at even strength by FSU, Miller netted her third on a power play (5:43). Sophomore Brooke Doten made it 7-3 with her first score of the contest (4:46). The Bulldogs would add another power play goal before Miller scored her fourth on a 6-on-5 (2:19) to make it 8-4. Hill (1:00) and sophomore Hannah Palmer (0:00) would score goals at even strength to send the Bruins into the break with a 10-4 advantage.
The Bruins exploded for seven goals in the third to put the Bulldogs away. Senior Brooke Maxson (7:55) got things going right away in the period. Miller then tallied her fifth of the game at even strength (6:32) to put the Bruins up 12-5. Hill would complete her hat trick with power play goals at the 4:52 and 3:27 marks of the third to put UCLA up 15-8. Juniors Ava Johnson (2:19), Bella Wentzel (1:48), and Val Ayala (0:54) would all score goals in the period to push the lead to 17-9 by the end of the third.
UCLA would tack on two more goals in the fourth. After a score by the Bulldogs, Ayala added her second of the game (4:02) on a power play and senior Lexi Liebowitz found the back of the net on a power play (1:57) to provide the 19-10 final.
UCLA returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 10:00 a.m. PT when they travel to take on No. 13 Indiana.
