Deja Vu: Puig, Sun Devils Leading After One Round in La Quinta

No Sun Devil has won three straight tournaments since junior Phil Mickelson in the spring of 1991.

Sophomore David Puig is 36 holes away from doing just that at The Prestige in La Quinta after firing his collegiate best with a 7-under 64. Both ASU and Puig are leading the 24-team tournament, held at the Greg Norman Course at PGA WEST (par-71/7,100 yards).

Puig, coming off wins at the Southwestern Invitational and the Amer Ari, shot his 7-under 64 with seven birdies (second best in round one) and leads by three strokes over three players as 23 players in the 120-player field shot below par. In 126 tournament holes so far this spring he has 80 pars, 35 birdies and two eagles.

ASU shot 8-under 276 and leads Pepperdine by five strokes as only four teams in the field shot below par. Mason Andersen had five birdies and shot a 1-under 70 and is tied for 16th.

Junior Cameron Sisk is competing in the 46-player Prestige Individual Invitational held at Coral Mountain Golf Club (par 72/7,145 yards).  He shot a 2-over 74.
