CORVALLIS, Calif. – Timmy Allen and Branden Carlson did their best to keep the Utah men's basketball within striking distance Thursday night at Oregon State, but a 17-0 run by the Beavers was too much to overcome in its 74-56 loss on the road at Gill Coliseum.
Utah started the game off slow and trailed the home team 13-4 out of the 15:42 media break before Allen went on a 10-2 run of his own to bring the Utes within 15-14 of the Beavers. Utah tied things up at 18-18 when Allen found Lahat Thioune for the two-handed jam on its first trip down on offense with 7:27 left in the first half.
The remainder of the first-half slowed down a bit before Allen picked up his 12th point of the half on a drive to the rack to bring the Utes (9-9, 6-8 Pac-12) within 27-24 with 29 ticks left. OSU's Warith Alatishe connected on an and-1 as the clock winded down to set Utah back 30-24 heading into the break.
Getting back into the game after picking up two early fouls in the first half, Branden Carlson came alive for the Utes and scored 10 of Utah's first 13 points to give Utah the 37-32 lead to start the second frame. The tail-end of that stretch saw the South Jordan product score seven-straight points – including a breakaway jam. Ethan Thompson's three put an end to the OSU (11-10, 7-8 Pac-12) scoring drought and brought it within 37-35 of Utah. Jarod Lucas then gave the Beavers the lead right back when he connected on a 3-pointer two possessions later, 38-37, heading into the first media timeout (15:34).

Carlson knocked down a pair of free throws for his 12 point of the night out of the media break and gave Utah the 39-38 lead, but that would be the last time Utah would be within striking distance of the Beavers. After Carlson's free throws, Oregon State put the game away with a 17-0 run that spanned 7:29 minutes before Riley Battin ended the scoring spree with a 3-pointer with 7:47 remaining.
Allen did his best to bring the Utes back, scoring 12 of Utah's final 14 points for a team-high 24 points but it wasn't enough as the Utes fell to the Beavers 74-56.

Allen ended the night just shy of double-double, recording 24 points with nine rebounds and five assists. Carlson finished with 16 points, 14 of which came in the second half, on 5-of-7 shooting. The two combined to go 13-of-13 from the line for the Utes as well. The last time Utah was perfect from the line in a game (min. 10 FTM) dated back to Feb. 9, 2012, at Arizona State when the Utes went 11-for-11.
Allen and Thioune combined for 18 points and 7-of-11 shooting for the Utes in the first half while the rest of the team had six points on 1-of-11 shooting with seven turnovers … the 20 Ute turnovers led to 26 OSU points … Allen and Carlson accounted for 40 of the 56 points (.714) Thursday night … the 12 steals by OSU is the most for an opponent this season, previous was 11 by Washington State.
Utah remains on the road as it heads 45 minutes down the road for a 7 p.m. (MT) battle against the Oregon Ducks on Saturday, Feb. 20, at Matthew Knight Arena on Pac-12 Networks.
