OSU Drops First Match Against Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. – The Oregon State volleyball team dropped game one to Arizona in three sets on Friday night in the McKale Memorial Center.
Arizona won the sets with scores of 25-22, 25-19, and 26-24.
Oregon State took the opening two points of the match before Arizona went on a 3-0 run to take its first lead of the game. After OSU took a 6-5 lead, the Wildcats opened the game up with a four point lead to force a Beaver timeout.
The teams went on to trade points, but Arizona was forced to call its first timeout after Oregon State took a 20-19 lead behind a Lindsey Schell and Aliyah McDonald block, and a Schell kill. Just three points later, Arizona called its second timeout following back-to-back kills from Mychael Vernon and Schell.
Kateryna Tkachenko served up an ace out of the timeout, but it was the Wildcats pulling out the 25-22 victory after closing the set on a 4-0 run.
Set two opened just the opposite of the first set, Arizona took the first two points followed by a 3-0 Oregon State run. After being tied at 7-7, the Wildcats went on a 6-2 run to take a 13-9 lead and force a Beaver timeout. A 4-1 run brought OSU within one, 14-13, as Arizona called a timeout.
The Wildcats went on a 3-1 run out of the timeout to take a 17-14 advantage as they went on to the 25-19 set win.
Oregon took an early 10-6 lead in the third set, forcing Arizona to call its first timeout. The Wildcats were forced to use their second timeout just five points later after OSU took a 13-8 lead behind a Vernon kill and an Anastasija Svetnik kill.
A service ace from Grace Massey after the timeout ignited a 4-2 Beaver run as Oregon State claimed a 17-10 lead. Arizona responded with a 6-2 run of its own to make the score 19-16 in favor of OSU and force the Beavers to call their first timeout.
Vernon got her 14th kill of the night after tooling an Arizona block to snap a 3-0 Wildcat run and put Oregon State ahead 21-19. The Wildcats tied the game at 21-21 to cause OSU to use its second timeout.
Following an Oregon State set point that the Wildcats fought off, Arizona closed the game on a 3-0 run for the 26-24 set victory and sweep of the match.
- Freshman Mychael Vernon led the Beavers with 14 kills.
- Freshman Izzi Szulczewski posted a team-high 28 assists.
- Senior Grace Massey recorded a game-high 15 digs, while freshman Ellie Turner also posted double-digit digs with 10.
- Junior Lindsey Schell had a game-best five blocks.
- Oregon State out-blocked Arizona 9-5.
Next Up: Oregon State will face Arizona in the second match of the series on Sunday at 12 pm (PT) in McKale Memorial Center.
