Feb 20, 2021

Box Score | Oregon 7, EWU 0

EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men's tennis team continued its undefeated start to the season Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 victory over Eastern Washington at the UO Student Tennis Center. Wrapping up the win in less than two hours, the Ducks improve to 6-0 heading into Sunday's weekend finale against Washington.

How it Happened: The Ducks ran their winning streak in doubles play to 16 in a row, sweeping all three matches of the opening point for a fifth-consecutive match. Joshua Charlton and Brandon Lam were the first team off court with a 6-3 win at the No. spot in the lineup. Oregon clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 2 from Luke Vandecasteele and Quinn Vandecasteele.

The home team completed the sweep at No. 3 doubles, recording a 6-4 decision in favor of Emmanuel Coste and Jesper Klöv-Nilsson.

In singles play, Klöv-Nilsson worked quickly and earned the Ducks' second point of the day with a 6-1, 6-0 win at the five spot in the lineup. The sophomore has dropped just 15 games in five matches this year.

Within seconds of each other, Quinn Vandecasteele and Lam closed out their matches in straight sets at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, to put the Ducks ahead 4-0 and clinch the team victory. Lam has now totaled 35 wins—singles and doubles, combined—since joining the Ducks prior to the 2019-20 season.

Charlton and Luke Vandecasteele quickly pushed the team's lead to 6-0 with wins at No. 1 and 4 singles, respectively. Freshman Ryoma Matsushita extended his personal winning streak to five in row, beating Jeremy Mueller at No. 6 singles.

Quotable: "It was definitely important. Playing Washington tomorrow is going to be a physical match. It's a very big match for us, emotionally and physically, so it was good that the boys could come out today to take care of business and get the job without spending too much time on court in order to be ready for tomorrow." – Joshua Charlton, on being efficient Saturday vs Eastern Washington

Notable: Dating back to its opener, Oregon has won 16 doubles matches in a row … 17-1 in doubles play this season … sixth different mix of the singles lineup … Klöv-Nilsson (5-0), Quinn Vandecasteele (5-0) and Lam (4-0) remain undefeated in singles play

Up Next: The Ducks return to action Sunday afternoon to host Washington (4-2) in a non-conference match. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. (PT) at the UO Student Tennis Center.
