Hornets Blank Bears, 3-0, In Season Opener
SACRAMENTO - The California softball team returned to action for the first time in nearly a year on Saturday, but the Golden Bears were shut out by Sacramento State, 3-0, in Cal's 2021 season opener at Shea Stadium in Sacramento.
Making her collegiate debut, Sona Halajian held her own with two strikeouts and two earned runs in four-plus innings of work. She chipped in at the plate, as well, singling in her first at-bat.
Makena Smith singled in the top of the first to extend her hitting streak to 20 games, which dates back to last season.
Morgan Zamora compiled a two-hit day for the Bears.
After three scoreless frames, the Hornets struck first in the bottom of the fourth. Gusty winds disrupted an infield pop-up, which allowed Sacramento State's Lewa Day to take second on the error. The next batter, Carley Morfey, singled to right, sending home Day.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Hornets added to their lead with a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk.
Cal's best scoring opportunity came in the top of the fourth. Kacey Zobac singled with two outs, which was followed by back-to-back hit batters to load the bases. The Bears couldn't plate any of those runners, though.
In addition to her single, Zobac also threw out a Hornet trying to steal second.
Cal (0-1) returns to action on Sunday against Saint Mary's at noon from Levine-Fricke Field in the 2021 home opener. Due to public health guidelines, fans are not allowed to attend any home events this season.
