No. 1 Bruins Sweep Sunday Twinbill With LMU
LOS ANGELES - The top-ranked Bruins scored in seven of their 10 trips to the plate on Sunday at Easton Stadium, defeating Loyola Marymount in a doubleheader by scores of 11-1 in five innings and 6-1.
In game one, eight different players posted 10 hits for the Bruins (4-0), as junior Aaliyah Jordan went 2-for-2 with four runs batted in and junior Delanie Wisz added two hits and two RBI. In the circle, junior Holly Azevedo earned her first win of the season, striking out one in five innings and giving up a run, two hits and two walks.
UCLA scored six times in the first inning. Senior Bubba Nickles walked, junior Briana Perez reached on a bunt single and Jordan tripled them both home to put the Bruins on the board. Wisz followed with a double to left to bring in Jordan with the Bruins' third run. After freshman Alyssa Garcia reached on an infield single, sophomore Anna Vines singled up the middle to bring in Wisz to make it 4-0. A sacrifice fly to center off the bat of freshman Seneca Curo plated Garcia, who moved to third on the Vines single, while a single from junior Kinsley Washington brought in senior Alana Snow, who was running for Vines, to make it 6-0.
It remained 6-0 until the Bruins scored five in the fourth. Sophomore Kelli Godin opened the frame with a walk, Nickles singled and Perez walked to load the bases. Jordan followed with a single to right to bring in Godin and Nickles to increase the lead to 8-0. A Wisz single to left-center plated Perez to make it 9-0. After freshman Taylor Edwards reached on an error to load the bases, freshman Thessa Malau'ulu collected her first career hit and RBI on a single to left to bring in pinch-runners Lauryn Carter and Grace Guzman.
Loyola Marymount (3-4) scored a run in the fifth to make it a 10-run margin.
In game two, the Bruins (5-0) had eight hits from six players, with Nickles posting two hits and two RBI and Perez adding two hits. Freshman Lexi Sosa picked up her first win of the season, striking out two in five innings and giving up a run, two hits and two walks. Sophomore Megan Faraimo struck out four in two innings of shutout relief, allowing one hit.
Perez led off the scoring with a one-out, solo homer in the bottom of the first. Loyola Marymount (3-5) scratched back with a run in the top of the second, but the Bruins scored the next five runs.
In the second, Malau'ulu walked with one out and scored on a Washington double to right-center to put the Bruins back ahead. One out later, and with Washington at third, Nickles reached on an infield single, as Washington scored to make it 3-1.
A leadoff double by Jordan and a one-out double by Curo in the third increased the lead to 4-1. UCLA used that same method to score again in the fifth, as a Perez leadoff double and a Wisz one-out double made it 5-1.
In the sixth, Malau'ulu drew a leadoff walk, and was pinch-run for by Carter, who scored two batters later on a Nickles double to left-center.
