FULLERTON, Calif. – Utah baseball earned its first win of the 2021 season over CS Fullerton on Monday, February 22.

Utah's bats got going early and some clutch defense and pitching late that led to a 6-5 victory to finish off the series.

Tyler Thompson led the way on offense finishing the day going 2-5 with two doubles and three RBI. Jayden Kiernan and Kai Roberts also had two hits in the game.

With things tied at one, Jaylon McLaughlin knocked a single in the fifth inning After McLaughlin stole second base, Trey Clarkson singled to right center putting the Utes back in the lead, but they were far from finished in the inning. After a walk and a hit by a pitch, Thompson had a bases-clearing double to left center putting Utah up 5-1.

CSF got one run back in the fifth, but Kayler Yates stepped up to the plate to start the sixth inning and hit what would prove to be a very critical solo home run, putting Utah up 6-2.

Cal State Fullerton scored two runs in the seventh and one run in the ninth, but when Utah needed to step up it did. Brayson Hurdsman came on in the seventh with two outs and got the crucial last out only limiting the Titans to two runs that inning.

In the ninth, they threatened again, but the Utes got out of the jam stranding two CSF base runners to earn their first victory of the season.

Clarkson not only went 1-4 with an RBI, but also was the starting pitcher. He pitched 4.1 innings, only allowing one earned run on four hits.

Matthew Sox got the victory coming into the game and pitching 0.2 innings to get out of the fourth with two runners on base.

Hurdsman got his first save with Utah after pitching the final 2.1 innings.
