Chiam Sits in a Tie for Sixth after Day One at The Joust Tournament

JURUPRA VALLEY, Calif. – Fifth-year senior Nicklaus Chiam sits in a tie for sixth-place to lead the Washington State men's golf team after the first day of competition at The Joust Tournament hosted by Cal Baptist. The Cougars will resume the tournament's second round in seventh place after play was suspended due to darkness on Monday, Feb. 22.

Chiam was approaching his final hole of play in the second round at the Goose Creek Golf Club when play suspended. The Singapore native ended his first day at The Joust at +5 to sit in a tie for sixth place on the player leaderboard. The fifth-year senior was sitting at one-over par entering his final hole of the second round. He opened the tournament by carding four-over par (74) in the first round. Chiam collected a team-best six birdies on the day, five of which came in the opening round.

Freshman Jaden Cantafio impressed in his WSU debut, as the Tustin, California native goes into play tomorrow in a tie for 16th at +8 overall. Cantafio carded six-over par (76) in his opening round, and improved his score by four strokes in the second. He will enter tomorrow at +2 with two holes left to play in the second round.

Sophomore Pono Yanagi concluded his first day at the Goose Creek Golf Club inside the top-25 on the player leaderboard, as the Hilo, Hawai'i native goes into Tuesday tied for 24th at +9. Yanagi sits at +3 with three holes left to play in the tournament's second round. The sophomore had the best hole of the day, as he carded an eagle in the second round on the 17th hole. Junior Max Sekulic and graduate transfer Eric Hagen will begin tomorrow in 38th and 47th, respectively.

As a team, the Cougars currently sit in seventh place on the team leaderboard. Washington State carded 301 (+21) in the first round of The Joust and will open play tomorrow at +33 overall. WSU sat at +12 in the second round when play was halted.
