Honor to Abramson
STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford senior driver Tyler Abramson was named MPSF/Kap7 Player of the Week after leading the Cardinal to a 2-1 record, including a 17-10 victory over No. 1 Cal, at the Stanford Round Robin event at Avery Aquatic Center Saturday and Sunday.
Abramson scored 10 goals and had four assists, and three steals. Against Cal, Abramson had four goals, two assists, and two steals. He scored four of Stanford's first seven goals in that game and ignited a 4-0 first-half run that allowed Stanford to take control. His final goal of the contest came off his own steal on defense that led to a breakaway goal for a 10-5 lead.
In a 15-9 victory over USC, Abramson scored three goals. He tallied Stanford's first two goals, the second of which kick-started a 6-1 run.
In an 11-10 loss to No. 2 UCLA, Abramson had three goals, and an assist. In all, Abramson's 10 goals came on 17 shots, for a scoring percentage of .588.
This is the first career MPSF weekly award for Abramson, a two-time All-American and All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honoree. Abramson leads Stanford (3-3) in goals with 14.
Next for Stanford is the MPSF tournament at UCLA's Spieker Aquatics Center. Stanford is the No. 3 seed and plays Friday, March 5, at 1 p.m. against the Austin/Penn State Behrend loser. A semifinal against No. 2 seeded UCLA awaits the winner on March 6 at 2 p.m.
The championship final is March 7 at 3 p.m. At stake is an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament. Also, this season, three at-large teams will be admitted into the NCAA field.
