Maldonado Diaz Earns Second Pac-12 Freshman of the Week Honor

TUCSON, Ariz. -- For the second time in the last four weeks, Arizona volleyball outside hitter Sofia Maldonado Diaz has been named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.

Maldonado Diaz had a monster weekend during Arizona's two-match sweep of Oregon State, averaging an phenomenal 5.71 kills per set on .307 hitting in the two matches. She added 16 digs and a pair of blocks on the weekend as well.

In Friday's sweep, Maldonado Diaz had 16 kills in just the three sets and posted 10 digs for her second career double-double. On Sunday, the freshman was even better, posting 24 kills on .314 hitting, coming one kill shy of her career high, 25 in a five-set match vs. Washington.

Maldonado Diaz joins Penina Snuka (2013) and Kamaile Hiapo (2019) as the only three Wildcats to earn multiple Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors. An Arizona underclassmen has now earned a weekly conference honor in three of the last four weeks and five of the last eight week overalls dating back to last year -- Kamaile Hiapo was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week in weeks 12 and 13 of 2019 and was the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week in week 3 this season.  

Her 40 kills during the weekend moved her into third place in the Pac-12, averaging 3.97 kills/set this season. She is trying to become the first (and only) Wildcat freshman since Kim Glass in 2002 (4.96/set) to average 4.00 kills per set.
