Men's Golf Earns Second-Place Finish at The Joust
JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. – The Washington State men's golf team posted a second-place finish at The Joust Tournament on Tuesday Feb. 23, as the Cougars carded at 877 (+37). Fifth-year senior Nicklaus Chiam posted a top-10 finish for the Cougs, as he completed play at the Goose Creek Golf Club shooting six-over-par; 216.
The second-place finish at The Joust marks WSU's highest team finish outside of Pullman in seven seasons, when the Cougars captured the team title at the Pacific Invitational back on Nov. 1, 2014. Washington State shot 284 (+4) in the final round of The Joust to climb up five spots on the team leaderboard on Tuesday, moving from seventh to second.
"We took another step in the right direction this week," said head coach Dustin White. "The wind was up and the course played tough. Our guys stood up to the challenge and played some gritty golf. We were in the thick-of-things and it felt good. We'll keep working on a few things and get back after it at Bandon Dunes in a couple of weeks."
Chiam ended The Joust carding 216 (+6) to earn a sixth-place finish at the event. The fifth-year senior shot one-over par; 71 in both the second and third rounds. It marks Chiam's first top-10 finish as a member of the Cougar scoring lineup, as the Singapore native also posted a top-10 finish as an individual back during the 2017-18 season, with an eight-place finish at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate.
Graduate transfer Eric Hagen had the team's best round of the tournament in Tuesday's third round, as he carded three-under par; 67 to end the tournament in a tie with teammate Jaden Cantafio for 16th on the player leaderboard. Hagen collected five birdies in the third round to end The Joust with a total score of 221 (+11).
Sophomore Pono Yanagi collected four birdies on Tuesday to end him earn a top-25 finish. The Hilo, Hawai'i native ended his week shooting 222 (+12) to round the team scoring for the Cougs.
Loyola Marymount took home the team title at The Joust, carding 852 (+12). The Cougars finished six-strokes better than No. 7-ranked Utah Valley at The Joust Tournament. LMU's Gavin Cohen won the individual title by shooting one-under par; 209.
The Washington State men's golf team will be back in action March 8-9 when they travel to the Beaver State to participate in the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Oregon.
