Bergin Named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week
UCLA junior right-hander Jesse Bergin has been named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Wednesday morning.
It's the first weekly league honor in Bergin's career. He was also a nominee for UCLA's Student-Athlete of the Week award.
The Studio City, Calif. native led the Bruins to an 8-2 victory over San Francisco on Saturday afternoon, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning.
Though he eventually did allow a hit – a two-out single in the seventh – Bergin ultimately finished his day with six strikeouts, no runs allowed, and one walk over a career-high 6 2/3 innings pitched. When he left the game, the Bruins held a 7-0 lead.
Bergin started the game by retiring 10 consecutive batters, ending that streak with a fourth-inning walk. He ultimately retired 20 of the 23 batters he faced on Saturday.
The dominant start over the Dons was another example of early-season success for Bergin, who's now gone without allowing an earned run in 28 2/3 career innings during the month of February.
UCLA returns to action this weekend with a home-and-away series with UC Irvine, hosting the Anteaters on Friday night and Sunday afternoon, and traveling to Orange County for a Saturday afternoon matinee.
