No. 17 USC Women’s Tennis Gears Up For Big Weekend at Home

Feb 24, 2021

This week, the No. 17 Women of Troy challenge crosstown rival No. 6 UCLA on Friday (Feb. 26) at 12 p.m. PT in a nonconference match. Then, the Trojans will take on No. 13 Oklahoma State on Saturday (Feb. 27) at 12 p.m. PT.

Despite winning both matches last weekend, USC fell two sports in the national rankings to No. 17.  Three Trojans boast singles rankings: No. 22 Angela Kulikov, No. 48 Eryn Cayetano and No. 103 Naomi Cheong. Additionally, Cheong is ranked the No. 10 Newcomer/Freshman in the nation. In doubles, the duo of Angela Kulikov and Eryn Cayetano are ranked No. 12.

Redshirt senior Summer Dvorak has been a consistent player for the Trojans and holds the team's longest winning streak with five straight victories. Junior Salma Ewing and sophomore Eryn Cayetano both hold three-match winning streaks of their own.

All-American and redshirt senior Angela Kulikov returns for her fifth year as a member of the Women of Troy. After reaching the NCAA Doubles semifinals in 2019, she had a strong 2020 until the COVID-19 pandemic cut the season short. Holding the No. 1 position, she finished the season holding the No. 27 rank in singles and the No. 16 rank in doubles with partner Eryn Cayetano. She enters the season ranked No. 22 in singles and No. 12 in doubles. Kulikov hopes to close out unfinished business this season and make her mark in her final year of collegiate competition.

The UCLA Bruins are ranked 6 in the nation. They are 5-2 on the 2021 season. In their last match on Feb. 20, the Bruins lost 4-3 to California in Berkeley, Calif. UCLA boasts five nationally ranked players: No. 7 Abbey Forbes, No. 9 Elysia Bolton, No. 19 Jada Hart, No. 113 Sasha Vagramov and No. 119 Vanessa Ong. The Bruins also have the No. 1 ranked doubles pair in the nation in duo Bolton/Hart. In a tight series between the Trojans and the Bruins, USC holds a 50-48 record over UCLA dating back to their initial meeting in 1977.

The No. 13 Oklahoma State Cowgirls hold a 4-3 record. Most recently, they hosted a doubleheader on Feb. 20 where they beat Central Arkansas 4-0 and Missouri State 4-1. Before facing the Trojans, they will challenge Oral Roberts at home on Feb. 24 and travel to Malibu to face Pepperdine on Feb. 26. The Cowgirls have four nationally ranked players: No. 24 Bunyawi Thamchaiwat, No. 54 Lisa Marie Rioux, No. 77 Ayumi Miyamoto and No. 105 Alana Wolfberg. In doubles, Miyamoto/Thamchaiwat hold the No. T34 rank. USC is 3-2 against Oklahoma State in their series dating back to 1987.
