SEATTLE – The No. 7 Utah volleyball team dropped its first match of the season to No. 9 Washington on Thursday, Feb. 25 at Alaska Airlines Arena in straight sets (21-25, 23-25, 19-25).

The setback dropped Utah's record to 8-1 on the season.

Dani Drews led the team with 13 kills and Kenzie Koerber was the other Ute with double-figure kills with 10.

The first two sets were very tight, but the Huskies edged out late in each set to gain the advantage.

Utah held a 14-11 lead in the first set, but UW scored five of the next six points to go back in front by one. Washington kept the momentum, building the biggest lead of the set going up 22-18. The Utes got the score back within two twice, but the Huskies closed out the set 25-21.

The second set was equally close and the only difference was Washington went on a 4-1 run in the middle of the set to go up 19-16. The Utes got within one three times after that, but UW held the lead eventually clinching the set 25-23.

Through the first two sets there were 19 ties.

In the third set, Washington grabbed an early lead and Utah brought it back within four late, but the cushion the Huskies built earlier in the set was too much to overcome.

Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres had 32 assists and eight digs.

Vanessa Ramirez led the team with 10 digs.

Utah and Washington will play one more time this weekend on Saturday, February 27 at 12 p.m. MT.
