ASU Wraps Day One of Championships at the Peak
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Sun Devil's opened up the Championships at the Peak at the Air Force Academy in very strong fashion on Friday. Day one featured multiple first-place finishes for the Maroon and Gold ahead of tomorrow's finals. Hayley Raybrun won the women's pole vault with a height of 13'9.25," a few inches shy of her personal best. Both Kentre Patterson and Jamar Marshall Jr. took first in their respective heats for the 60m hurdles, and Antonio Mitchell II secured a spot in the 60m finals by taking first in his heat (6.75). Dubem Nwachukwutook his heat in the 400m sprint (48.22), and Keira Christie-Galloway had the third-fastest time in the women's 60m hurdles (8.35) and will find herself in the finals tomorrow too. The action will resume tomorrow morning starting at 10 a.m. with the men's shot put where NCAA record holder Turner Washington will look to continue his dominance.
Patterson and Marshall Jr. will be entering the 60m hurdles finals tomorrow with the two fast times. Patterson clocked in at 7.82, while Marshall Jr. was just behind him with a time of 7.87. Patterson will look to repeat gold after taking home first place at the Texas Tech Shootout two weekends ago.
The women's pole vault was all ASU. Rayburn took first, while Sevanna Hanson and Tommi Hintnaus were part of a three-way tie at 4.10m/13' 5-1/4". Rayburn continues her dominance after setting a new program record just last meet.
Austin Kratz had a very impressive run in the 200m. He placed second in his heat but will be entering the finals tomorrow with the second fastest time of 21.60.
Ta'nalya Gordon ended the day with a top-five finish in the women's long jump. She was neck and neck the whole event before eventually being overtaken. She finished with a jump of 5.90m, a new personal best.
The women's 200m final will include two Sun Devils. Taryn Hankins and Ta'nalya Gordon secured top-8 finishes after finishing in 25.33 and 25.43, respectively.
