No. 3 UCLA Cruises to 13-9 Win at No. 5 UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. -- No. 3 UCLA (2-0, 0-0 MPSF) won its second-straight road game to open the 2021 season with a 13-9 win at No. 5 UC Irvine (4-2) on Friday afternoon at the Anteater Aquatics Complex. The Bruins improved to 30-0 all-time against the Anteaters.

Sophomore Abbi Hill led all scorers with five goals on eight shots and finished with six points with one assist. Senior Jahmea Bent got the start in the cage and had 13 saves.

Junior Val Ayala got the Bruins on the board first with a goal from the front court (7:41) on the opening possession of the game. After UCI tied it, senior Myna Simmons scored a power play goal (6:03) to put the Bruins back in front, 2-1. That trend would continue all the way through the period. Hill converted her first goal of the game on a penalty shot (5:04) to make it 3-2 Bruins. Junior Ava Johnson would score from two meters to give UCLA a 4-3 lead (4:21). Senior Lexi Liebowitz's goal at even strength (3:34) was the final goal of the first period, giving UCLA a 5-4 advantage.

Hill scored her second goal of the game (7:22) to open the scoring in the second period, extending the lead to 6-4. After UCI trimmed the Bruins' lead to 6-5, Liebowitz added her second goal of the game to push the lead to 7-5 (5:33) and then freshman Malia Allen scored from the front court (3:11) to end the scoring in the second period with UCLA leading 8-5 at the break.

Hill completed her hat trick by converting a penalty shot (7:00) to extend the Bruins' lead to 9-5 in the third period. Hill's fourth goal came at the 2:20 mark and put the Bruins up 10-6. Allen scored her second of the game with just 0:04 to go in the quarter to give UCLA an 11-7 lead heading into the fourth.

Hill again opened the scoring in the fourth period, her fifth of the game, to push the lead to 12-7 with 4:37 to go. Freshman Anneliese Miller scored her first goal of the game and (2:01) to put the Bruins up 13-7. UC Irvine scored the final two goals of the game to provide the 13-9 final.

UCLA returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 13 at 11:00 a.m. PT when it hosts California in its home opener to begin MPSF play at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center.
