Sparacino's Grand Slam Propels Bears Past California Baptist
STANFORD - After singling in the walk-off winning run last Sunday, Karlee Sparacino played hero once again, belting a grand slam that solidified California's 7-4 victory over California Baptist Friday afternoon in the Stanford Invitational at Smith Family Stadium in game one of a doubleheader on Friday.
The Bears (2-1) got things rolling right from the start in the top of the first with two runs. Mikayla Coelho singled to start the game. After advancing to third following a wild pitch and a ground out by Makena Smith, a California Baptist error allowed Coelho to score. Later in the inning, a two-out infield single by Kacey Zobac scored Lauren Espalin to make it 2-0, Bears. The run scored was one of two in the game for Espalin.
In the top of the third, Smith singled up the middle to start the frame, extending her hitting streak to 22 games. Espalin was then hit by a pitch and Sona Halajian walked to load the bases. With two outs, Sparacino connected on her four-bagger to right field to put Cal up, 6-0. The four RBI for Sparacino tied a career high, and it marked her third career four-RBI game.
Kennedy Thomas gave the Bears an insurance run in the top of the seventh. She tripled to left-center and then scored on an ensuing Lancer error.
In the circle, Chloe Romero picked up her first win of the season, striking out three Lancers, and allowing no runs on three hits and one walk in four innings of work. Haylei Archer made her collegiate debut, pitching the final three innings of the game, striking out six batters.
