Beavers Fall to No. 3 Arizona in an Extra-Inning Game
TUCSON, Ariz. - The Oregon State softball team fought hard for the win but it was No. 3 Arizona taking home the 3-2 eight-inning victory, Sunday afternoon.
Head coach Laura Berg is "very proud of the way the team competed."
Freshman Madison Simon opened the game with a double towards right field. Left on base at the conclusion of the top, Simon was the only Beaver to earn a hit in the first five innings.
Senior pitcher Trystan Melancon, and the OSU defense, started out strong. Similar to the Beavers, the Wildcats opened with a double but freshman shortstop Grace Messmer (caught fly) and Melancon (two strikeouts) closed the inning without an Arizona run earned.
The second and third inning flew by without a hit by either team. The Wildcats notched the game's next hit in the bottom of the fourth inning. A double followed by a single led to the first run of the game to put Arizona up, 1-0.
Unable to answer in the fifth, junior Mariah Mazon tied the score with her second home run of the weekend in the top of the sixth inning.
Holding on to the tie in the bottom of the sixth, the Beavers were unable to garner a lead in the seventh inning. Arizona drew a walk for its first batter before hitting a sac bunt and advancing the runner. Later on, the Beavers had notched two outs but the Wildcats had runners on all three bases. In the final play of the seventh inning, sophomore Ashton Zeiher caught a line drive to right field.
Starting the eighth inning with a runner on second, Zeiher, freshman Xiao Gin opened with a single down the middle of the field. Freshman Charity Sevaaetasi topped Gin with a double to hit Zeiher in for an RBI.
Holding a 2-1 lead as the Beavers took the field for the bottom of the final inning, the Wildcats notched two runs for the extra-inning victory.
Oregon State came together for five hits and five strikeouts.
The Beavers head to Colorado next weekend for the Colorado Classic (Mar. 5-7).
