Ducks Lose Weekend Finale at No. 20 Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. – The Oregon men's tennis team got wins from Emmanuel Coste and Joshua Charlton at No. 1 and 2 singles but No. 20 Arizona came away with the 5-2 victory Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Ducks falls to 8-2 this season with an 0-2 mark in Pac-12 play.
How it Happened: Charlton improved to 8-2 this season—and 2-0 in league play—with a 7-6(3), 6-4 win over Alejandro Reguant at No. 2 singles. The UO standout won all three of his singles matches during the weekend road trip in Arizona, beginning with a three-set win Thursday against New Mexico that clinched a 4-3 team win.
In Sunday's doubles, the Ducks tallied the first win with a 6-4 triumph at No. 2 by Brandon Lam and Luke Vandecasteele. However, Arizona (11-1) took the remaining two matches to secure the doubles point. The doubles point came down to court three where the Wildcats won in a tiebreaker—7-6(5) to clinch.
Arizona stretched its lead to 3-0 with wins at No. 4 and 5 singles before Charlton put the Ducks on the board. The final three matches on court—No. 1, 3 and 6 singles—were all three setters. The Wildcats went on clinch the match at the six spot.
Coste recorded his third win over a ranked opponent this year, beating No. 50 Jonas Ziverts in three sets at No. 1 singles. He fell behind early in the third set—down 0-3—before rallying for the 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 win. Coste improves to 7-1 this season in singles play.
The home team won the final match of the day, a three setter at No. 3 singles between two freshmen in the Ducks' Quinn Vandecasteele and Arizona's Gustaf Strom who was ranked as the No. 2 newcomer in the country by the ITA. Strom won the matchup, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(4).
Up Next: Oregon begins a five-match home stand next weekend with two matches against Cal Poly. The Ducks' next Pac-12 match is Friday, March 12, a home date against Utah.
