MVB Begins Busy Week with CUI on Tuesday
THIS WEEK -- Bruins Welcome Concordia and Stanford this week — UCLA (5-3), ranked No. 9 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll, will host Concordia University Irvine (1-4) for a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) contest on Tuesday and Stanford (0-2) for matches on Friday and Saturday in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. UCLA is coming off of a split in a pair of battles last week with Concordia.
All of this season's home matches are scheduled to be played in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. No fans will be present for the 2021 UCLA home matches.
LAST MEETINGS -- The Bruins defeated Concordia 25-22, 25-19, 25-16 last Thursday in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. The Eagles returned the favor in five sets in Irvine on Saturday night 25-21, 25-20, 20-25, 22-25, 12-15. Cole Ketrzynski led UCLA in both matches with 12 and 19 kills, respectively. Merrick McHenry added a combined 19 kills and six blocks, while hitting over .400 in each contest. UCLA posted nine aces in its win, while CUI rang up a Bruin 2021 opponent-best 10 aces in its win. Stanford hit .565 for the match and swept UCLA in the lone 2020 meeting --- 17-25, 19-25, 17-25 --- of the teams.
NOTES -- Cole Ketrzynski has served up 12 aces to lead the team this season and his 0.61 average tops the MPSF ... he had a career-best five in last week's win over Concordia after having a total of four for all of the 2020 season ... Ketrzynski was named the Molten/MPSF Offensive Player of the Week and Off the Block National Opposite of the Week after totaling 18 kills (2/18) and 21 kills (2/20) in a pair of wins at USC ... His 17 kills in last season's win at Concordia were the most by a Bruin true freshman since Micah Ma'a put down 18 balls against Hawai'i in Feb. 2016 ... Sam Kobrine posted a career-high 44 set assists in the Feb. 20 win at USC in which the Bruins hit .304 ... Kobrine remains the only player in the nation to have registered a triple-double in 2021 -- vs. USC (2/13) 14 kills, 15 assists and 10 digs ... Ethan Champlin tied his career-high with 13 kills at USC (2/20) while hitting .400 ... Champlin was named Molten/Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Defensive Player of the Week (2/8) after his performance at BYU - 15 digs, 6 blocks, 2 aces, 18 kills and handled 40 of 41 serves without error in the matches ... Austin Matautia had 9 kills in Saturday's match at Concordia and had career-best 5 blocks in (2/20) win at USC .... Matautia hit .400 with 8 kills in win at BYU ... Merrick McHenry posted a combined 19 kills and 6 blocks in last week's matches vs. CUI while hitting over .400 in each contest ... McHenry ranks 7th in MPSF in hitting % at .357 and 9th in blocks at 0.84 ... he recorded 4 block assists in win at USC (2/20) ... Cole Pender had 11 digs, one shy of his career best, in 2021 opener against GCU ... Alex Knight had 8 kills at Concordia (2/27) ... in his first action of 2021 at USC (2/18) Knight ended up with 3 kills, 4 digs, 1 block solo, 2 block assists ... Adam Parks registered a block solo and 3 blocks assists versus USC (2/18) in a start at middle blocker ... Middle blocker Daniel Matheney put down a career-best 10 spikes versus GCU in the opener while hitting .500 after recording 15 kills and 8 blocks in the last 3 matches of 2020 ... Miles Partain served up his first career ace at Concordia (2/27).
AT HOME -- The Bruins have posted a 2-1 home record in 2021 ... UCLA had an eight-match Pauley Pavilion win streak cancelled with the USC loss (2/13) ... Over the past five-plus seasons, UCLA is 42-6 in matches played in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom (2016: 10-1--lost to UCI, 2017: 8-1--CSUN, 2018: 13-2--Long Beach 2xs, 2019: 7-1--Long Beach; 2020: 2-0; 2021: 2-1--USC).
NCAA STATS -- UCLA enters the week 9th in the nation in set assists (11.47) and 11th in blocks (2.32) ... It rates 14th in kills per set (12.20).
MPSF -- Due to the possibility of an unbalanced number of league matches played this year, conference wins (NOT win percentage), will be the first criteria looked at to determine MPSF Tournament seeding (Apr. 22-24 at BYU). Conference win percentage will be the first tiebreaker.
