Schwartz, Fried Garner Conference Weekly Awards

Mar 1, 2021

SAN FRANCISCO - After defeating No. 3 Stanford over the weekend, Oregon State's sophomore Abby Schwartz and senior Kaillen Fried have been honored by the conference, as announced Monday afternoon.

Schwartz was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week while Fried garnered the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week award.

"I'm extremely happy for both Abby and Kaillen," said head coach Matt Kagan. "Although these are individual awards, these two are selfless human beings who put the team's success first. Kaillen made one of the best defensive plays I've seen in a long time and Abby finished her opportunity to help the team win."

Fried played a crucial part in the Beaver defense against No. 13 California and, more importantly, No. 3 Stanford. In the historic win against the Cardinal, she was a member of a defense that allowed just one goal from 15 shots. When the score was tied at 1-1, Stanford took a shot that made it past the Beaver goalkeeper. Making the most important defensive play of the game, Fried went up for the ball and headed it away from the net to keep the game tied.

Not only was Fried an important part of the Beaver defense but she also assisted with the first goal against Stanford. This goal was a tipped ball off a header from a corner kick. Fried took the corner kick and placed it perfectly so that the rest of the Oregon State offense could capitalize on the opportunity.

Schwartz had the most important offensive play on OSU's weekend. With just over seven minutes left in the contest, she scored the game-winning goal against the Cardinal. Fighting hard to come back from a 1-0 deficit at the halfway point, her teammates combined to score early in the second half. Needing just one goal, Schwartz took her first shot of the game and slammed the ball past the Cardinal goalkeeper.

Oregon State last earned the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week award in September 2019 when Brianna McReynolds notched her first career hat trick. The last Beaver Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week was Allison Pantuso, who earned the honor in October 2017.

Since the Pac-12 divided its Player of the Week award, the Beavers have seen two in one week just once before. On September 25, 2012, Jenna Richardson (Offensive) and Sammy Jo Prudhomme (Defensive) notched both conference awards available for the week.

Schwartz and Fried, along with the rest of the Oregon State women's soccer team, will continue its conference schedule this weekend against USC and UCLA.
