Ducks In Second Place Amid Tough Conditions
SOMIS, Calif. – Playing in tough scoring conditions on a difficult setup for the second straight day, Oregon shot 21 over in round two of the Bruin Wave Invitational at The Saticoy Club to head into the final round in second place, five shots off the lead.
Ching-Tzu Chen leads a group of three Ducks in the top 10, sitting in solo second place at 1 over, just two shots off the lead. Hsin-Yu (Cynthia) Lu is in a tie for seventh at 7 over and Briana Chacon is 8 over and tied for ninth, competing as an individual.
How it Happened: Chen started a bit slow, making bogeys on each of her first two holes to drop to 2 over for the tournament, but bounced back with steady play through the rest of her round. She made five straight pars before getting back to 1 over with a birdie at the par-5 eighth. After making the turn at 1 over, she dropped a shot with a bogey at 10, but got the shot back with a birdie at the par-5 14th. From there she made four straight pars to get in with a 1-over 73.
Lu matched Chen with a 1-over 73, also turning in some steady play throughout. She got off to a good start with a birdie at the par-4 second, but bogeyed two of the next three holes to drop over par. After 10 straight pars, Lu bogeyed the 16th, but bounced right back with a birdie at the par-4 17th to get back to 1 over and shoot even par on the back nine.
Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen was the only other Duck to break 80 in the difficult conditions, shooting a 7-over 79 to move to 15 over for the tournament and a tie for 27th. Despite shooting an 8-over par 80, Chacon remains in the top 10 at 8 over for the week and in a tie for ninth.
Tze-Han (Heather) Lin turned in the final counting Oregon score with a 12-over 84 to drop into a tie for 32nd, while Alexis Phadungmartvorakul shot a 15-over 87.
