No. 21 ASU Tops No. 28 Oklahoma 4-3, Extends Streak
NORMAN, Okla. - GONE STREAKIN'!!
The No. 21 Sun Devils (11-1) notched another into the win column Friday afternoon with a 4-3 victory over No. 28 Oklahoma (6-5) at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, Oklahoma. The victory puts ASU's win streak into double digits as they record 10-straight victories and gets them one match closer to a weekend sweep on the road. Christian Lerby extended his singles record in the victory and now has seven straight wins.
How it happened
The Maroon and Gold kicked the contest off by clinching the doubles point thanks to court victories on one and three. At No. 1, Nathan Ponwith/George Stoupe defeated their opponents 6-2 while Lerby/Andrea Bolla cemented their 6-1 victory on No. 3.
Singles competition began with Makey Rakotomalala dropping his match 1-6, 4-6 on court three. ASU didn't take long to come roaring back with Bolla earning the Sun Devils their first singles point, 6-3,6-1. Lerby followed suit in a three-match nail biter on court six, defeating his opponent 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, while Ponwith clinched the match victory on No. 1 with a close 7-6, 7-5 win. As play continued, the Sooners did not go down without a fight, rallying for the last two points with a pair of wins on courts two and five. Despite their efforts, Stoupe and Tim Ruehl dropped their sets 6-7, 6-4, 7-10 and 6-7, 6-7, respectively.
