Los Angeles – No. 3 UCLA won its fifth consecutive game to start the season, defeating No. 20 Oregon, 3-0. Redshirt freshman Sunshine Fontes recorded her first multiple-goal game of her collegiate career, scoring two goals, including the game-winner in the first half.

Fontes dropped her first goal in the 37th minute, taking a pass from Olivia Athens just inside the box and firing far post to give UCLA the 1-0 lead, which the Bruins took into halftime.

The Ducks (2-2-1, 1-1-0) came out firing after halftime, with Ally Cook cracking a shot that went off the crossbar but managed to stay out of goal in the 49th minute. Zoe Hasenauer had a good look that was blocked in the 67th minute, and then just three minutes later, the Bruins doubled the lead on a goal by Mia Fishel. The sophomore forward pounced on a loose ball and went top shelf to the far post to record her third goal of the season.

Fishel and Fontes connected for goal number three, as Fishel chested a ball down and found Fontes at the top of the box. Fontes unleashed another top shelf goal, her team-leading fourth in just 175 minutes of play.

The Bruins (5-0, 2-0) had some opportunities early in the game, with a second-minute header by Athens saved by goalkeeper Leah Freeman and a pair of shots by Reilyn Turner going wide in the eighth and 12th minutes. UCLA goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy had four saves in the half, including one on a free kick by True Dydasco to the top corner in the 18th minute. Delanie Sheehan was active in the half, nearly scoring on a shot in the box that was saved by Freeman in the 24th minute.

Brzykcy recorded the shutout for the Bruins, her third in five games. She finished with four saves. Freeman had three for the Ducks.

UCLA will next play Oregon State on Sunday, Mar. 7 at 1pm in a game televised by Pac-12 Networks.
