Oregon State Falls to No.13 USC, 2-0
LOS ANGELES - The Oregon State women's soccer team fought hard but, ultimately, fell to No. 13 USC on Friday afternoon.
"USC is a top team," said head coach Matt Kagan. "Unfortunately for us, they capitalized on their chances and we didn't. This was another game where we created enough but, unfortunately, did not finish out our opportunities. We battled the Trojans and I am proud of that."
The Trojans started with offensive pressure right from the start. Their first shot came just a minute into the game with their first corner kick being taken at 1:12. Two shots, three corner kicks, and over 10 minutes later, the Beavers took advantage of their offense.
Oregon State earned its first corner kick in the 14th minute. Taken by sophomore Brianna McReynolds, sophomore Abby Schwartz marked the first of OSU's eight shots, sending it wide on the far side of the corner kick.
USC scored its first goal shortly after in the 19th minute.
Stepping up after the Trojan score, the Beavers outshot USC 4-1 for the remaining 25 minutes of the first half. Unable to finish on their opportunities, Oregon State went into halftime down, 1-0.
The Beavers kept up their offensive pressure throughout the second half but USC's defense was able to stop the majority of Oregon State's plays.
With just over a minute left in the game, the last of the Trojans' eight second-half shots made it past the goal line for their second goal.
Oregon State and USC took an equal amount of shots (five) in the first half but the Trojans outshot the Beavers, 8-3, in the second half.
OSU's defense held strong throughout the game blocking five shots to complement junior goalkeeper Bridgette Skiba's six saves.
The Beavers will continue their weekend in LA with an afternoon matchup against No. 3 UCLA on Sunday, March 7.
