USC Women’s Tennis Defeats Washington 4-3

SEATTLE--The No. 16 USC women's tennis team defeated No. 39 Washington 4-3 today (Mar. 5) in Seattle to open Pac-12 Conference play. The Women of Troy hold a 7-3 overall record and a 1-0 Pac-12 record for the 2021 season. 
 
The Trojans came out swinging as Cayetano/Cheong defeated Husky pair Fortin/Wong 6-2 on court one. USC tallied another win as Dvorak/Willson beat Chilton/Weil 6-3 on court three to claim the doubles point for Troy. Dvorak/Willson are undefeated this season as a doubles pair with five victories. On court two, Washington claimed a doubles win as Gallagher/Lin beat Trojans Ewing/McKee 6-4. 
 
USC entered singles leading the match 1-0. 
 
The Huskies were seeking revenge and were the first to make a move in singles. Washington's Sedona Gallagher defeated Trojan junior Salma Ewing 6-1, 6-2 on court three to even out the match score at 1-1. 
 
The Trojans responded with a point of their own as junior Danielle Willson beat Zoey Weil 6-2, 6-4 on court four. Following suit, redshirt senior Summer Dvorak beat Washington's Tara Chilton 6-1, 6-3 to push the Trojans ahead 3-1. 
 
On court two, sophomore No. 48 Eryn Cayetano beat Washington's Sarah-Maude Fortin 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the match for the Women of Troy. This is Cayetano's first clinch of the season. 
 
Although USC had won the match, the remaining two courts were played out. Washington scored both points as No. 74 Vanessa Wong beat Trojan freshman No. 103 Naomi Cheong 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-3 on court one, and Yolanda Lin defeated redshirt senior Clare McKee 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 on court six. 
 
The Trojans now travel to Pullman, Wash. to take on Washington State on Sunday (Mar. 7) at 11 a.m. PT.
