Cal Falls To No. 4 UCLA
LOS ANGELES – No. 8 California beach volleyball fell to No. 4 UCLA, 5-0, on Saturday afternoon at Mapes Beach in Los Angeles.
The Bears put up a fight as they pushed the Bruins in close matches on multiple courts, but ultimately UCLA came away with the win.
Jordan Polo and Ainsley Radell lost the first set to the pair of Devon Newberry and Lindsey Sparks bu a 21-17 score, but they bounced back early in the second set as they led 17-15, but the UCLA duo was able to mount a comeback and won the second set 22-20, to clinch the point for the Bruins.
Kate Bierly and Maya Gessner impressed in only their third career matches as they challenged UCLA, but fell 21-15, 21-17.
On court one, the first set ended with a UCLA block at the net, which saw them take the set, 21-17. Mima Mirkovic and Caroline Schafer tested the UCLA pair of Savvy Simo and Lexy Denaburg, but the Bruins won 21-16 in the second set in the final match of the afternoon.
UCLA clinched the match on court three with a 21-6, 21-7 victory.
The Bears will be back in action tomorrow as they take on Concordia (CA) at 11 a.m. and No. 7 Loyola Marymount at 1 p.m. Both matches will be at Great Park in Irvine, California.
