Card Sweeps Home Opener
STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 18 Stanford beach volleyball team swept its way through a pair of home-opening matches on Saturday, downing UC Davis 5-0 before defeating St. Mary's, 3-2, in the night cap.
At the first flight, Charlie Ekstrom and Sunny Villapando won both their matches in two sets to improve to 4-1 on the season. In the first match, they defeated UC Davis' Heather Reed and Megan Luly, 21-17, 21-13, before beating Crash Parker and Hawley Harrer of St. Mary's, 21-16, 21-18.
Freshmen Xolani Hodel and Kate Reilly went 2-0 on the day at the second flight, improving their record to 3-2 on the season. Hodel and Reilly won their first match, 21-14, 21-12, over UC Davis' Paloma Bowman and Colleen McGuire, before knocking off Jasmin Suarez and Sienna Young of St. Mary's, 21-11, 21-18.
At the third flight, Maddi Kriz and Maya Harvey split on the day and are now 4-2 on the season. The duo beat UC Davis' Rose Holscher and Madelin Smith in two sets before falling in a tough three-setter to Morgan Kendrick and Boo Laird of St. Mary's.
Maddie Dailey and Amelia Smith went 2-0 on the day at the fourth flight, winning in three sets over Jane Seslar and Alexa Rockas of UC Davis to start the day, before a straight-sets win over Karmin Brown and Maddie Bauman of St. Mary's in the evening match.
At the fifth flight, Ellie Gamberdella and Emmy Sharp split, winning the morning match in two sets before falling in two sets in the evening.
Kylee Matheson and Zeena Khazendar won both of their exhibition matches on the day, while Abby Converse and Winslow Church split their two matches.
Stanford is now 3-3 on the season and will play next on March 22 at UC Davis and vs. Hawai'i.
