MVB Trims Stanford in Four
The No. 9 UCLA men's volleyball team (8-3) topped Stanford for its third straight victory in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) contest on Saturday night in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Scores of the match were 21-25, 25-18, 25-12, 25-19.
The Bruins held Stanford to an opponent season-low hitting percentage, .111, for the second straight night. Cole Ketrzynski registered his eighth straight match in double-digit kills with a team-high 17. Merrick McHenry continued his fine play with 10 kills and a career-best three block solos. Ethan Champlin gave the Bruins a lift from the service line with a career-high five aces, including a streak of three-in-a-row in the second set, one shy of tying the school record. Cole Pender and Sam Kobrine added 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
In set one, UCLA snapped an 8-all tie by scoring four of the next five points for a 12-9 lead. A Ketrzynski kill extended the margin to 15-11. The Cardinal then used a strong service game to run off seven straight points to move in front 15-18. UCLA closed to 17-19 on a McHenry kill, but Stanford tallied the next three points. An ace by Champlin narrowed the deficit to 20-22, but the Cardinal rebounded to take the set 21-25. The Bruins hit just .125.
The Bruins scored seven of the first eight points to begin set two, with Champlin recording three-straight aces during the stretch, to open up a commanding lead. Stanford rallied to slice the margin to 14-11. Kills by Ketrzynski put UCLA up 17-13 and then 18-14. An Austin Matautia spike from the back row put UCLA in charge at 22-16. McHenry's swing ended the set at 25-18. UCLA hit .519 .
UCLA began set three by scoring five of the first six points. A Champlin ace and a block by Sam Kobrine/McHenry put the Bruins up 9-2. Champlin continued his tough service game and helped push UCLA in front 12-2 with kills coming from Ketrzynski and Sam Kobrine during the run. A cross court spike by Ketrzynski grew the margin to 16-5. McHenry's block solo extended the gap to 20-6. Champlin's swing clinched the set at 25-12. UCLA outhit Stanford .667 to -.125 for the frame.
UCLA opened up a 5-2 lead in set four behind the strong serve of Champlin and a couple of kills from Matautia. Stanford battled back to tie the score at 8-all. Kills from Champlin, Ketrzynski and McHenry put UCLA up 12-9. Another Champlin kill made it 15-12. A Ketrzynski kill and Cardinal error extended the margin to 18-14. Another McHenry block pushed the gap to 21-16. Sam Kobrine's swing ended the match with UCLA up 25-19.
UCLA outhit the Cardinal .402 to .111 for the match. The team were even in service aces (6) and total blocks (6.0). The Bruins will host No. 3 Pepperdine (7-2) on Thursday evening in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom to begin a two-match series with the Waves.
