LOS ANGELES -- No. 2 UCLA (6-6, 5-5 MPSF) fell to No. 3 Stanford (4-3, 3-3 MPSF) for the first time in 2020-21, losing 11-8 in the semifinals of the MPSF Championship at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon.

Seven different Bruins scored in the game with junior Jake Cavano leading the way with two goals. Freshman Garret Griggs played in his first collegiate game and had a strong showing, making 12 saves while allowing 11 goals.

Both teams battled to a 2-2 tie in the first period with the Bruins getting goals from redshirt freshman Jack Larsen (power play - 3:31) and sophomore Andy Rodgers (0:45).

Stanford won the second quarter, 4-3, to take a 6-5 lead at the break. Freshman Hayden Nightingale scored a power play goal (7:02) and sophomore center Gabe Discipulo scored from two meters (4:53) to put UCLA up 4-3. Cavano's power play goal (2:23) put UCLA up 5-4. But the Cardinal scored the last two goals of the period, including a goal with 0:17 remaining by Tyler Abramson.

The Cardinal won the third period 3-2. Redshirt freshman Giorgio Alessandria scored a goal at even strength (6:03) to trim Stanford's lead to 7-6. Senior Nicolas Saveljic's goal at the 2:36 mark of the third made it 8-7 Stanford and would be as close as UCLA would get the rest of the way.

Stanford pushed the lead to 10-7 on a goal by Quinn Woodhead with 2:51 to go in the fourth period. Cavano's second goal of the game came on a power play (1:15) to make it 10-8. Woodhead added his second of the game (0:24) to end the scoring for the game, providing the 11-8 final.

Andrew Chun registered eight saves for Stanford, which was led in scoring by Abramson, Woodhead, and AJ Rossman's two goals each.

The Bruins and the Trojans will square off in the third-place game tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. PT.
