USC's Evan Mobley Named To Wooden Award National Ballot
USC men's basketball freshman forward Evan Mobley has been named to the 2021 Men's National Ballot for the John R. Wooden Award, it was announced on ESPN's GameDay today (March 6). The list is comprised of 15 student-athletes who are the current front-runners for one of the most prestigious honors in college basketball, the Wooden Award All American Team™ and Most Outstanding Player Award. Mobley is one of four freshman and the only player from the Pac-12 to make the watch list.
The 7-0 Mobley is averaging 16.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.8 blocks per game through USC's first 26 games of the season. His 74 total blocks rank second on USC's all-time freshman shots blocked list and are the third most in the country this season. Mobley leads all Pac-12 players in rebounds (220), blocks and double-doubles (9).
Mobley is the only Division I player to be averaging at least 16.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 2.0 assists. Among Division I freshmen men's basketball players, Mobley ranks in the top five in blocks per game (1st, 2.8), field goal percentage (2nd, 58.2 percent) free throw attempts (2nd, 150), free throws made (3rd, 106), double-doubles (T-3rd, 9), total rebounds (4th, 220), defensive rebounds per game (5th, 5.73), total points (5th, 421) and points per game (5th, 16.2).
Mobley just keeps adding on to his 2020-21 accolades which include being named to the 2021 NABC Player of the Year Watch List, a Naismith Trophy semifinalist, a Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Award semifinalist, a Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award finalist and to the Pac-12 Media Preseason All-Conference First Team.
All balloted players have been certified by their university to meet or exceed the qualifications for the Wooden Award as set forth by Coach Wooden when the Award was established. The qualifications include: candidates must exhibit strength of character, both on and off the court; candidates must be full-time students in an accredited NCAA college or university; candidates must be making progress toward graduation and have a cumulative 2.00 grade point average since enrolling in their school; candidates must contribute to team effort; candidates must excel in both offense and defense; and candidates should be considered on their performance over the course of the entire season.
Voting will take place from March 15th to March 22nd, and voters take into consideration a player's entire season of play, as well as the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The finalists for the 2021 Wooden Award presented by Wendy's will be announced on March 26.
The Wooden Award All American Team™ will be announced the week of the "Elite Eight" round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2021 John R. Wooden Award will be presented by Wendy's following the NCAA Tournament in April.
