Huskies Fall To No. 6 Bruins

Mar 7, 2021

SEATTLE – The sixth-ranked UCLA Bruins were able to earn straight set wins at four, five, and six singles today and coupled with the doubles point, that secured a win over the 39th-ranked Huskies at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Washington (7-3, 0-2 Pac-12) showed its top of lineup prowess again by splitting sets at all of the top three courts, but then UCLA (8-2, 2-0 Pac-12) won two of three 10-point tiebreaks in lieu of full third sets.
Junior Sedona Gallagher was the one Husky to take her super-tiebreak, completing a win over Vivian Wolff, 6-3, 1-6, (10-4) at No. 3 singles. Vanessa Wong suffered a tiebreak loss, 10-6, after splitting the first two sets, for her first dual match loss of the year, against 7th-ranked Abbey Forbes. Sarah-Maude Fortin won her first set then lost the second as well as the tiebreak, 3-6, 6-4, (10-6), against 113th-ranked Sasha Vagramov at No. 2 singles.
"I thought UCLA played really well today," said Head Coach Robin Stephenson. "I thought they were more consistent and mentally tougher. I think we can be a lot better. I definitely don't think we had our best day out there. I think we came out a little flat and they jumped on us. They took it to us in a couple courts, and I told the team in order to win these matches we've got to be competitive on all six courts. We can't be getting down big and giving them separation. We've just got to keep working."
Zoey Weil dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Abi Altick at No. 4 singles, while freshman Tara Chilton fell 6-1, 6-2 to Annette Goulak at No. 5. Freshman Yolanda Lin had a tight second set that could have pushed the top three singles matches into full third sets, but she came up just short, falling 6-2, 7-5 to Taylor Johnson who clinched it.
The Bruins had two 6-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to clinch the doubles point. Chilton and Weil were even at 4-4 in their doubles match when it was suspended.
The Huskies will look to get back to their winning ways at home again next week as Arizona comes in on Friday, March 12, followed by Arizona State on Sunday, March 14.
