SALT LAKE CITY – The No. 9 Utah volleyball team earned a weekend sweep over the Stanford Cardinal, winning their Sunday match 3-1 (16-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-19) in the Huntsman Center.
Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres finished with 44 assist and 18 digs to lead Utah to the win.
She spread the offense around as five Utah student-athletes had at least seven kills. Dani Drews led the team with 19 kills. Phoebe Grace posted a season high 10 kills hitting a team-leading .368.
Utah got off to a slow start as Stanford got up early in the first set and took the opener 25-16.
The Utes came out with more energy in the second set taking an early 11-6 lead. The Cardinal got back within two, but the Utes used a big 6-0 run to push their lead out to 24-14. Utah tied up the match with a 25-17 second-set victory.
Utah carried the momentum they earned in the second set into the third building another big lead. They led by as many as seven points during the set before going up 2-1 in the match by taking the third 25-20.
The fourth was similar to the third set for Utah. They grabbed an edge early and continued to push their lead out. Stanford battled, but the Utes prevailed 25-19 to clinch the match.
After getting off to a tough start attacking wise, Utah hit .333 in the final set to clinch the match and move to 10-2 on the season.
Madelyn Robinson chipped in with nine kills and 10 digs. Megan Yett had eight kills and 10 digs. Vanessa Ramirez finished with her fourth straight match having double-figure digs posting 14.
This is the first season sweep Utah has had over Stanford in program history.
Utah will head back out on the road next week to take on the UCLA Bruins with the first match coming on Friday, Mar. 12 at 3 p.m.
