Stember Leads, Ducks In Third At Bandon
BANDON, Ore. – Nate Stember opened with a bogey-free 5-under 66 to hold a share of the lead while Oregon went 5 under as a team to sit in third after the opening round of the Bandon Dunes Championship at Bandon Trails.
How It Happened: Stember started his day at the seventh hole and began with back-to-back pars before his first birdie of the day at the par-5 ninth. After a few more pars, he caught fire during a stretch of three birdies in four holes from 14 to 17 to reach 4 under on the round. The Portland native then made par on the next six holes before capping his stellar round with a birdie at the par-4 seventh.
Jake Sollon joins Stember in the top 10, shooting a 3-under 68 to sit in a tie for seventh. He too was tied for the lead at one point thanks to back-to-back birdies at holes nine and 10 to open his round and another birdie at 14 that got him to 3 under. His only dropped shot of the day came at the par-3 17th, but he got that back with a birdie at the par-4 fourth hole before four straight pars to end the round.
Yuki Moriyama rounds out the Ducks in the lineup who are in the top 20 after shooting an even-par 71 to sit in a tie for 20th. Owen Avrit was the final counting Oregon score with a 3-over 74, putting him in a tie for 48th. Tom Gueant shot a 4-over 75 and is tied for 53rd.
Craig Ronne led a group of Ducks playing as individuals with a 3-under 68 of his own to sit in a tie for seventh. After a double bogey at hole one, his fourth hole of the day, he went bogey free with four birdies to get back into red figures and into the top 10. Padraic Sim and Greg Solhaug both shot a 2-over 74 as the other two competing as individuals.
