Men's Tennis Hires Karue Sell as Volunteer Assistant
LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's tennis program has hired former standout Karue Sell to the position of volunteer assistant coach, head coach Billy Martin announced Monday.
A native of Jaragua do Sul, Brazil, Sell embarked on a professional career after suiting up for the Bruins from 2013-16. He was an active tournament participant into 2019 before working with Naomi Osaka, the current WTA No. 2 singles player. Sell was by Osaka's side when she won her third Grand Slam singles championship at the 2020 US Open and continued to assist her as she took the top spot at the 2021 Australian Open.
Sell also served as volunteer assistant coach for Pepperdine under head coach Marcelo Ferreira during the 2016-17 season.
"I'm very excited to have Karue Sell coming back to be part of our coaching staff," said Martin. "He's had some real good experience since he left UCLA and I think he has a real coaching mentality, which will help our team immensely."
On tour, Sell captured singles titles at three ITF Futures tournaments in 2017 and 2018. His first came at the 2017 Claremont (Calif.) Club Pro Classic, where he edged out former UCLA teammate Martin Redlicki in three sets. Sell went on to take the top sports at the Southern California Pro Futures (Los Angeles) and Baptist Health Foundation Bolo Bash (Little Rock, Ark.) event in 2018. His ATP singles ranking reached a career high of 371 in 2018.
As a student-athlete at UCLA, Sell played for teams that amassed a record of 97-19, including a 26-2 mark in Pac-12 play. The Bruins were NCAA runners-up in 2013 and reached the semifinal round again one year later. Martin's teams won conference regular-season championships in 2013 and 2016 and tournament titles in 2013, 2014 and 2016.
Individually, Sell posted records of 104-31 in singles matches and 90-41 in doubles play as a Bruin. He collected 30 or more singles wins in 2013 (31) and 2016 (30) and reached a career-high No. 64 in the ITA singles rankings in 2014. On the doubles courts, Sell posted a team-high 24 victories in 2013 and, alongside Adrien Puget, saw his ITA doubles ranking reach a career-best No. 29. Sell was named to the All-Pac-12 Second Team in 2016 and received honorable mention in 2014 and 2015.
"He had an incredible winning record at UCLA, both in singles and doubles, and I always enjoyed working with him as a player," added Martin. "I couldn't be happier with bringing Karue Sell onto our coaching staff and I know the players who know him are really excited, also."
Prior to joining UCLA, Sell earned trips to three of four junior Grand Slam tournaments – the Australian Open. Roland-Garros and the US Open. With partner Mitchell Krueger, he reached the doubles semifinal round at the 2011 Australian Open. Sell made the singles Round of 16 at the 2010 US Open. His combined junior ranking climbed to a career-high No. 33 in the world during 2011.
