Men's Golf Ends the Bandon Dunes Championship in 12th
BANDON, Ore. – Graduate senior Eric Hagen paved the way for the Washington State men's golf team at the Bandon Dunes Championship, as the Olympia, Washington native finished the three-day tournament in a tie for 28th on the player leaderboard, carding 219 (+6).
Hagen's performance helped the Cougars collect a 12th-place finish at the Bandon Dunes Championship on Tuesday, March 9. Washington State carded 892 (+40) during three days of play at the Bandon Trails Golf Club. WSU ended the tournament by posting a team score of 295 (+11) in Tuesday's third round.
"We just had too many big numbers this week," said head coach Dustin White. "It makes it tough to put together a solid score when you working to get shots back. We're better than this and we just need to get back to playing to our strengths and executing. We've got a couple weeks before Stanford and will work hard to get it right."
Fifth-year senior Nicklaus Chiam paced the Cougars in the third round, as the Singapore native carded one-over par; 72 in his last 18 holes of play at Bandon Dunes. The fifth-year senior was one of three Cougs to collect three birdies during the third round, as sophomore Pono Yanagi and freshman Jaden Cantafio match Chiam's performance. Overall, Chiam ended the tournament in a tie for 46th, shooting 223 (+10).
Junior Max Sekulic concluded the tournament two-strokes behind Chiam to finish in a tie for 58th on the player leaderboard. Sekulic and freshman Jaden Cantafio each shot four-over par; 75 in the third round on Tuesday. Cantafio finished his tournament in a tie for 67th with a tournament score of 228 (+15). Sophomore Pono Yanagi rounded out the team scoring for WSU, as he ended the Bandon Dunes Championship in a tie for 76th.
Sophomore Yuya Eguchi rounded out his first tournament of the season in a tie for 42nd on the play leaderboard, as he carded 222 (+9). Eguchi played in the Bandon Dunes Championship as an individual.
San Francisco captured the team title at the 2021 Bandon Dunes Championship, as the Dons carded 16-under par; 836 over its three days of play. Fresno State's Tommy Stephenson brought home the individual title with a score of 205 (-8).
Washington State will be back in action March 25-27, as the Cougars head to the Bay Area to participate in The Goodwin at Stanford University.
