Bears Bash Broncos, 21-4
SANTA CLARA - California scored in every inning, including a 10-run fifth inning, and the Golden Bears smashed Santa Clara, 21-4, in five innings Wednesday afternoon at Santa Clara Softball Stadium.
The 21 runs scored by Cal (7-3) are the most since the Bears posted 22 against Stanford in 1993. Cal improved to 87-0 all-time against Santa Clara.
The Bears tallied three home runs against the Broncos. The round trippers were hit by Sophie Medellin, Tatum Anzaldo and Sona Halajian. Medellin got things started with her two-run homer in the first inning, part of a three-run first. Anzaldo blasted a solo shot in the fourth, and Halajian capped Cal's 10-run fifth with her three-run HR.
Five Bears recorded a two-hit day - Lauren Espalin, Amani Bradley, Kennedy Thomas, Morgan Zamora and Mikayla Coelho.
The big hits in the fifth inning included Thomas notching a bases-clearing three-run double and Aleia Agbayani slapping a two-run double.
In the fourth inning, Alexis Bishop recorded her first career hit and RBI with a double to left that scored Nicole Hammoude.
Hammoude and Kacey Zobac also doubled, giving the Bears five on the day.
The Bears were motoring around the base paths besides all the sprayed hits. Cal notched three stolen bases - two by Bradley and one by Thomas.
Haylei Archer picked up the win, improving to 3-0 on the year. She went four complete, striking out five, and allowed one earned run with one hit and one walk.
Cal heads to Fresno State for the Bulldog Classic this weekend from March 13-14. The Bears face the host Bulldogs and UC Davis in doubleheaders each day. The weekend starts with a clash against the Aggies on Saturday, March 13, at 12:30 p.m. from Margie Wright Diamond.
