Medley Relay Team, DeRyk and Ungur Qualify For 2021 NCAA Championships
SALT LAKE CITY - Utah swimmers Cooper DeRyk and Andrei Ungur earned bids to the 2021 NCAA Men's Swimming Championships after strong performances at the Pac-12 Championships. After earning a spot individually, the Ute duo earned a spot at NCAAs for both the 200 and 400 medley relay team from Utah that will consist of DeRyk and Ungur, along with Andrew Britton and Finn O'Haimhirgin.
DeRyk claimed his spot at the national championships in the 50 free and 100 fly, and is also invited to swim the 100 free. DeRyk posted a school-record time of 46.00 seconds in the 100 fly at the Pac-12 Championships to mark his NCAA qualification time, while he recorded a mark of 19.46 seconds in the 50 free. DeRyk also posted an NCAA consideration time at the Pac-12 Championships in the 100 free with a time of 43.31 seconds.
Ungur qualified to the NCAA Championships in the 100 back after he posted a time of 46.37 in the prelims of the Pac-12 Championships. His time ranks No. 2 in school history.
With the Ute duo being invited, the medley relay team raced by DeRyk, Ungur, Britton and O'Haimhirgin will have an opportunity to compete in the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay. The four Utes posted a time of 1:24.23 - an NCAA 'A' cut time - to place second at the Pac-12 Championships and set a new school record in the 200 medley relay. Ungur will swim back for the squad, while Britton swims breast, DeRyk swims fly and O'Haimhirgin swims free.
This will mark the first NCAA Championship appearance for DeRyk, Ungur and O'Haimhirgin, while it will be Britton's second appearance at NCAAs on a 200 medley relay team. The 2021 NCAA Men's Swimming Championships will be March 24-27 in Greensboro, N.C.
