Baseball Takes Down BYU 6-3 in Series Opener
SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah baseball team scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to get a 6-3 win over the BYU Cougars at Smith's Ballpark in the first game of the series on March 11.
In the eighth inning with Utah leading 3-2, Kai Roberts stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a two-run single to score Chase Fernlund and Jaylon McLaughlin to break the game open and go up 5-2. The Utes added one more before the end of the inning and held on 6-3 to get the win.
Justin Kelly set the tone on the mound going 6.2 innings pitched, only allowing two earned runs on six hits. He struck out six including striking out the side in the sixth inning.
The Utes had a season high 13 hits with five guys having two hits in the game.
After a scoreless first three innings, Utah struck first in the fourth inning with a single from Chase Fernlund to bring Brock Rudy around from second. The lead didn't last long as BYU got one back in the top of the fifth to tie the score.
Things stayed the same until the seventh when both teams added a run to tie the score at two.
Heading into the eighth inning, Utah kept the Cougars scoreless setting up their big inning.
Tyler Thompson got the inning started with a single followed by a Chase Fernlund single to put two on with one out with Jaylon McLaughlin coming to the plate. He got a bunt single to score Thompson from third. Kiernan got another single to load the bases and bring Roberts up who came through with his two-run single. To finish the inning off, Vinny Zavolta drew a bases-loaded walk to put Utah up 6-2.
Brayson Hurdsman came in to finish things off for Utah and secured the 6-3 victory moving Utah to 2-8 on the season.
Matthew Sox came in and pitched 1.1 innings and didn't allow a hit. Overall, the Utes only gave up seven hits today.
Utah and BYU will face each other two more times this weekend with tomorrow being at 3 p.m. in Smith's Ballpark. On Saturday, the two teams will finish the series in Provo.
