USC Women’s Tennis Travels to UC Santa Barbara and Host Pepperdine

This week, the No. 21 Women of Troy travel up the 101 to take on the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Friday (Mar. 12) at 12 p.m. PT. USC will then return to Marks Stadium on Sunday (Mar. 14) at 12 pm. PT to face No. 4 Pepperdine for the third time this season. 

The Women of Troy dropped five spots in the national team rankings after last weekend's matches against Washington and Washington State.  Three Trojans boast singles rankings: No. 22 Angela Kulikov, No. 48 Eryn Cayetano and No. 103 Naomi Cheong. Additionally, Cheong is ranked the No. 10 Newcomer/Freshman in the nation. In doubles, the duo of Angela Kulikov and Eryn Cayetano are ranked No. 12. 

The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos are 1-2 overall on the 2021 season. They are not currently ranked as a team, nor do they have any ranked singles or doubles players. In their last match against Pepperdine on Mar. 5, the Gauchos lost 7-0 to the Waves. USC holds an 26-2 all-time record over UC Santa Barbara dating back to their initial meeting in 1977. 

The Pepperdine Waves are currently ranked No. 4 in the nation and are 6-2 on the season. The Waves have six ranked players on their squad. Fifth-year and three-time All-American Ashley Lahey returns and kicks off the season with the No. 1 singles ranking. Also ranked in singles are No. 12 Shiori Fukuda, No. 33 Jessica Failla, No. 36 Anastasia Iamachkine, No. 45 Lexi Ryngler and No. 88 Taisya Pachkaleva. The Waves do not have any pairs ranked doubles. In their last match on Mar. 5 , the Gauchos defeated UC Santa Barbara 7-0. USC is 43-19 all-time against Pepperdine.
