Three Sun Devils in Top-10 at Clover Cup

MESA, Ariz. – No.7 Sun Devil Women's Golf hosted the first round of the Clover Cup on Friday at Longbow Golf Club.

The field consisted of 12 strong teams from conferences across the country. The beginning of the tournament had windy and rainy weather conditions clearing up by the second half of the day.

Linn Grant (-3/69) continued her roll, finding herself in the Top-5 again after earning a tie for third following the first 18 holes.  Grant recorded five birdies, tied for the third most of anyone in the field. She kept her scoring consistent throughout the the round, ending both the front and back nine under par.

Alessandra Fanali (-3/69) joins teammate Linn Grant in a tie for third, thanks to a four-under run over her final 14 holes. Not only did she record five birdies, which was tied with Grant for the team lead, a bogey-free back nine was key to her moving into the Top-5. 

Three different Sun Devils currently sit in the Top-10 after round one, including Alexandra Forsterling. She shot a 70 (-2) to secure a tie for seventh. Playing as an individual, Forsterling birdied three holes on the front nine on her way to scoring one-under on the front nine. Her strong performance continued throughout the day, as she delivered a bogey-free back nine that included a birdie on the par-5 15th.

As a team, ASU (E) is in fourth trailing behind third-place Houston (-2) by two strokes. UNLV (-4) is second and the leader University of Arizona finished the day -7. With 36 holes left to play, there is a lot of time to make up ground in the standings. 

Playing as an individual, freshman Breyana Matthews made her first appearance as a Sun Devil today. She recorded her first collegiate birdie on the par-four eighth hole.

The Sun Devils started the match strong by having consistent scores throughout the front nine. Overall, the team registered 15 of their 23 birdies on the first nine holes. The trio of Amand Linner, Olivia Mehaffey, and Ashlely Menne look to move up tomorrow as they currently sit in a tie for 33rd place.

The seven Sun Devils will tee-off all throughout the morning tomorrow, as they complete the second of three rounds for the tournament championship. Amanda Linner is the first one to tee-off, followed by Olivia Mehaffey. Their five teammates wait until mid-morning to begin their rounds. Here is how Arizona State will tee-off in round two:
