Bears Blank Aggies, 8-0
FRESNO - For the second straight game this week, California only needed five innings to take care of business and get the win. The Golden Bears shut out UC Davis, 8-0, in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Bulldog Classic at Margie Wright Diamond on the Fresno State campus.
Lauren Espalin homered twice, her first multi-homer game of her career. They were the fourth and fifth roundtrippers of her career. Espalin accounted for Cal's first three runs, leading off with a home run in the bottom of the first and she homered again in the bottom of the second with a two-run shot.
Sabrina Nunez garnered her first career triple in the bottom of the fourth, scoring Karlee Sparacino.
Makena Smith ended the game a clean 3-for-3 with two singles and a double. She also collected two RBI. Following Nunez's triple in the fourth, Smith singled her home along with Amani Bradley.
Cal (8-3) closed it out in the bottom of the fifth with a bases-loaded walk to Alexis Bishop and a single by Bradley that scored Mikayla Coelho.
Chloe Romero improved to 4-0 on the year, picking up the complete game shutout. She tied her career best with seven strikeouts, and allowed just four hits and walked two.
Cal faces Fresno State later today in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.
